WORTHY CAUSES

TROOP AID

Was founded in November 2006, by three ex servicemen as a result of a visit to Selly Oak Hospitals Alexandra Wing in Birmingham. This is the home of the Defence Welfare Services who are responsible for the welfare of all Armed Forces Personnel, male and female, who have been injured during the conflict in Afghanistan and elsewhere. When Troops return to the United Kingdom from the war zones they arrive back without their personal effects or clothing. The objective of TROOP AID is to supply the “basic essentials” when service casualties return from serving their country overseas. Our grab bags are currently being sent out to the UK Military Hospitals in Afghanistan, Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham and other Ministry of Defence Hospital Units within the UK. In addition to this emergency pack we also supply on demand to the injured service personnel many other items of clothing, and footwear. We deal directly with the Defence Medical Welfare Service and other military medical establishments in the UK, where there is a need. We have sponsored two rooms at Selly Oak Hospital for the families of the Armed Forces Personnel who are in intensive care.

BOOKS, CD’s & DVD’s

Dear Ray

A collection of original WW2 letters written to a serving ack ack gunner by his ATS fiancée, mother and other members of his extended family has recently been published by Loaghtan Books

Ray Hibberd - the Ray of the title - met his fiancée when they were both serving in an anti-aircraft battery. They were posted all over South East England and kept in touch by mail. Various allusions within the correspondence are the starting point for background information about the duties of the ATS, home-made remedies, the difficulties of getting to work/school as bombing disrupted transport, the homesickness of both men and women as they left home for the first time, the provision and use - and cost - of home air-raid shelters, the call up of older women, rationing, etc, etc.

Over 100 of the letters survive and cover the period of the couple's courtship, marriage, the birth of their first child, Ray's inclusion in the British Army on the Rhine and his eventual demobilisation at the beginning of 1946.

The Casualties were small
The original writing of May Hill – Home Front Diaries and Poetry – prompted by the Outbreak in 1939 of World War Two. The area of Lincolnshire (‘Bomber County’) around May’s village had quickly become a training ground for men of all services: RAF, Army and Navy (HMS Royal Arthur at ‘Butlins’, Skegness) as well as home to many evacuees.

Mavis's Shoe
A haunting, beautifully-written blend of fact and fiction that captures the strength of humanity, courage in adversity and heartbreaking loss - Mavis's Shoe is an emotional and compelling novel for adults and young adults. Contemporary in theme (about bombing and the effects of war) this book is about the Clydebank Blitz during the Second World War told through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, Lenny Gillespie. Lenny survives the bombing, but in the chaos of that night she cannot find her mum and her wee sister, Mavis. Told in an urgent, true-grit voice, the story describes the devastation of the blitz as seen through Lenny's eyes.

The Battle of the Flames

The Books tells the story of the civil defence and the air raids on Nottinghamshire during the Second World War. Herbert Morrison used the phrase “The Battle of the Flames" during a speech in April 1941 whilst referring to the war on the Home Front.
An absolutely brillaint book packed with information & personal stories.

Austerity Diary From Lavendar Cottage

Our membership is made up of former WW2 ‘helpers’, escapers and evaders, their families and friends, historians, researchers, and others who are interested in our aims.

Our aim is to preserve and commemorate the memory of the ‘helpers’ of the escape lines and of the ‘helpers’ who worked alone, in order to teach successive generations about their vital role in WW2. Without those brave people, many Allied soldiers and airmen, who found themselves stranded behind enemy lines, would not have been able to return to the UK to continue the common fight for freedom; they would have been captured, or dead. They have never forgotten the people who helped them.
